W: Welcome to Amy's Gift-Wrap!
May I help you, sir?
M: Hi. This is my wife's birthday present
and I want to get it gift-wrapped.
W: We have several options for wrapping.
I bet you’ll love them. Do you want to
put it in a box?
M: Yes, please. I think just a small box
will be fine.
W: I see. Then, please choose a wrapping
paper. We have solid colors, floral print,
and polka dot.
M: I’d like a neat and simple one. So,
just plain pink paper, please.
W: Plain pink... Okay. Do you want to
add ribbon or any decorative bow?
M: Ribbon? Hmm... yeah, I think the ribbon
with a bow would be great.
W: Do you want me to cross the ribbon
in the center and make a bow?
M: Rather than centering it, I think the
top left corner would look better.
W: Top left corner... I see. Then, would
you like a big bow or a small one?
M: Since the box is small, I think a small
one would be better.
W: Okay. Here it is.

M: Hi. I just got a text
message from the apartment manager. It
says you have a problem in the drain.
What's wrong with it?
W: It's clogged and the water won't go
down.
M: Let me take a look. You know why? It's
clogged with hair. No wonder the water
won't go down.
W: Well, I guess the people who lived
here before didn't clean the bathtub.
M: I guess so. They might have been very
lazy.
W: Right. I found everything here was
covered with dust when I first got here.
Anyway, what should I do now?
M: Don't worry. I've got some acid here.
It'll help dissolve the hair.
W: Oh, wow! It stinks!
M: From now on, clean your bathtub every
time you use it, and then there shouldn't
be any more problems.
W: Thank you very much. You've been very
helpful.

M: Hey, Sue! I heard
you went to Singapore last weekend. How
was your trip?
W: Hi, Jake! It was really great! Guess
what happened there.
M: You're making me curious. Tell me about
it.
W: On the first day, we arrived late at
night and went to the bakery because we
were really hungry.
M: So, you couldn't find any bakery open.
Right?
W: We did find a bakery and chose some
bread we liked. However, we only had US
dollars. We didn't have any Singapore
dollars or credit cards.
M: Didn't they accept US dollars?
W: Actually, we thought they would, but
they didn't.
M: So, what happened?
W: We explained the situation to the owner
and asked him to accept US dollars. Then,
he asked us if we were foreigners.
M: Why? Does it make any difference?
W: When we said we were from Korea, he
said the bread was free because we were
guests from another country!
M: It sounds like you had an awesome trip.
I want to visit Singapore, too!

W: All regular, please.
M: Would you like sugar or cream in the
Americano?
W: No thanks. Just black, please.
M: All right. Would you like anything
else?
W: Well, those cookies look great. I'll
have two of those please.
M: OK. 20 dollars for the coffees and
5 dollars for the cookies.
W: Wait a minute. I have this coupon.
Can I get a discount with it?

W: Hello, Dan. This is Nancy.
M: Hi, Nancy, what's up?
W: You know my sister, Lisa. She’s going
to get an operation next week.
M: Good heavens! What's wrong with her?
I thought Lisa was so healthy.
W: It's just a small tumor. She took a
preliminary examination for the operation
last week.
M: Did you get the results? Is she okay?
W: I got the results yesterday and her
heart beat is somewhat irregular.
M: Hmm...That could be because she was
too nervous during the medical check-up.
But an additional close examination is
needed anyway.
W: That's why I called you. You’re the
heart specialist I trust the most in our
hospital.
M: Don't worry. I'll take care of her.
Bring her to me today or tomorrow.
W: Thanks, Dan. I will.

W: Seoul City Bus Tour
is the quickest, most convenient way for
visitors to explore Seoul’s tourist sites.
For the price of one ticket, you can get
on and off the bus at any stop along your
route. Just get back on the next bus as
soon as you're done looking around. The
route takes you to royal palaces, through
Seoul’s major scenic spots and to the
city’s nighttime attractions. In addition,
a new double-decker bus is available to
take you along Seoul’s newly restored
Cheonggyecheon Stream, the city’s new
center for culture and leisure. To top
it off, each bus comes equipped with earphones
that give you tourist information about
the various sites in five different languages―Korean,
English, French, Japanese and Chinese.
It's safe, convenient, and fun. Give it
a try.

M: I keep getting a password error message
when I try to log in.
W: If it continues, you’ll have to get
a new one. The tech department could have
erased your password while installing
some new software.
M: Okay, what should I do now?
W: You might have to go to them and sign
up for a new one.
M: What a hassle! Anyway, where's the
tech support office?
W: It's on the second floor, next to the

M: I'd better get down there right away.
There's no time to lose. I need to catch

M: I'd love to, but I promised to visit
my friend in the hospital at 9. Can you
finish before 8:30?
W: I don't know if I can finish it by
then. Can you put off the appointment
for me?
M: Sorry, honey. But I’ll be back as soon
as possible.
W: Okay, then, please come back early.
[telephone rings] Hello? Oh, Jane! Why
are you crying? What? Oh, no.... Okay..
I’ll be there in a minute. Bye.
M: Hey, what's wrong? Where are you going?
You said you had a big presentation to
prepare.
W: I do, but my best friend's dad passed
away, so she asked me to visit her.
M: By the way, when is your presentation
due? If you have some more time, you can
do it after you come back.
W: I have to finish this today, but I
cannot let her be alone, either. And you
have to go to the hospital at 9! What

W: It is a clean, plentiful
source of energy. It produces no pollution.
Enough of it comes to the Earth in one
day to supply the planet's energy needs
for a year. It is only available during
the day, when power is most used. It is
a renewable resource. The Earth will probably
run out of oil, coal, and natural gas
in a few hundred years. So this new energy
resource would be most valuable in the
future. To be used on demand, this energy
must be stored during the day. But some
energy is lost when transferred to batteries.

W: Hello! Passengers
of flight 321 flying to Los Angeles. The
flight is slightly overbooked, so we are
offering complimentary tickets to passengers
willing to take a later flight. Again,
we ask for volunteers willing to give
up their seats in exchange for the complimentary
tickets. Passengers taking the complimentary
tickets can go to the airline counter,
located on the first floor. We're looking

W: Korea Hotel, Front
Desk. May I help you?
M: Yes, I'd like to book a room for three
nights.
W: OK. When would you like to visit?
M: From April 4th to 6th. How much are
the rooms?
W: It is usually quite expensive at this
time of the year because so many tourists
come to this city to see the cherry blossoms.
Rooms range from 150 to 250 dollars a
night. What kind of room would you like?
M: I`d like a double room.
W: Our doubles are 180 dollars and 200
dollars a night. The more expensive rooms
have twin beds.
M: I`d like a room with twin beds. Can
I get a room with a lakeside view?
W: For the lakeside view, you will have
to pay 20 dollars more. Would you like
to do that?
M: Well, it comes to 220 dollars for one
night. It's more expensive than I had
expected. Um...In that case, I think I'd
rather stay for just two nights.
W: All right, sir. What day will you arrive
on?
M: I'll arrive on April 4th. Do you take
credit cards?
W: Of course, sir.

M: How are your university
applications going?
W: Well, it's a pain in the neck, but
I've finally got it narrowed down to three.
Two of them are the top choices and the
other is for backup.
M: Have you got your application materials
together, yet?
W: Most of it. I've got the transcripts
and I have to finish the letter of intent.
Right now, I'm mostly worried about getting
letters of recommendation from the teachers.
M: You’re one of my top students. I'd
be happy to write a letter of recommendation
for you.
W: Thanks a million. I really appreciate
it. I think that two of the universities
have special recommendation forms that
you need to fill out.
M: Well, make sure that you go through
the proper procedures. Usually they won't
consider the applications if they are
not completed properly.
W: You mean they won't even look at my
application unless it has everything?
M: Sure! I don't want you to miss an opportunity
just because you didn't complete the required
paperwork properly.
W: All right, I'll make sure that all
the applications are completed this week.

W: It's a nonprofit organization to sponsor
children in poverty and provide social
welfare.
M: Why the sudden interest in it?
W: Do you remember the powerful earthquake
in Haiti in January?
M: Of course. The whole country fell apart
completely.
W: According to the News, many children
lost their parents and are suffering from
hunger. Their looks broke my heart.
M: So, you are trying to find what you
can do to feed them.
W: Right. While surfing, I found this
web site. It is holding a fund-raising
campaign for the children in Haiti.
M: I already donated some money for Haiti
at school. But I'd like to join you.

M: Last summer there
was a little trouble between Kevin and
Jim. Kevin liked soccer and was a good
player, so everybody loved him. Jim was
Kevin's best friend and they seemed to
get along very well. But one day, Kevin
heard that Jim was spreading some rumors
that Kevin wanted his own way in everything,
even in the soccer field. Even though
Kevin thought Jim was not the kind of
person who talked behind someone’s back,
from that day on, there has been something
awkward between them. Kevin thought he'd
done nothing wrong to Jim and being trapped
in this situation was really stupid. This
year, Kevin and Jim happen to be in the
same class, and Kevin wants to go back
to the way things were before the awkward
situation. In this case, what advice would
you give Kevin?
